driving down a texas road

my world was gray and blue
and getting only blacker
but then one day a flash
a yellow white flash of light
and a deep, resonating
reverberating sound filled my ears
the flash has faded
but i can still hear that sound
my eyes don't burn any more
but i can't forget your voice
and i can't escape the silence
the most godawful sound of all

i don't see lightning like before
but lightning only lasts an instant
i will always hear the thunder roll
roll and roll and fade and fade
nothing to see for miles around
not a trace of a yellow ghost
or a white phantom past
but gray and blue and black and black
